Frequently Asked Questions
Detailed answers to common questions about Emma’s data residency.
What is data residency?
Data residency is the country or region where data is stored and, for AI tools, where inference runs. For legal teams, it determines which laws and client requirements apply to confidential deal data. It is one of the first questions in any legal AI evaluation.
What is the difference between data residency and data sovereignty?
Data residency is about location: where data is stored and where AI inference runs. Data sovereignty is about jurisdiction: which country's laws govern the data, and who can require access to it. A vendor can host data in one region while being subject to another country's laws, so firms often assess both.
Where does Emma store my data?
With the standard setup, data is stored and AI inference runs across the EU and the US. With the data residency add-on, both stay in the region you choose for each data room. SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 controls apply to every option, with GDPR controls in the EU, and your data is never used to train Emma’s intelligence.
Where is data processed with Emma’s standard setup?
Where capacity is available within the EU and the US. Every location and subprocessor is listed in our subprocessor list.
Can I choose a different region for each deal?
Yes, with the data residency add-on. Your team chooses between the EU and the US for each data room that opens, and the room carries a tag showing its region. If your firm needs one region for everything, an admin can lock it.
Can I change a data room’s region later?
No. The region is set when the data room opens and stays fixed, so your data never has to move between regions.
What does an allocated EU or US data residency cost?
A flat 20% on your document-based pricing, agreed when you sign. It’s available on every plan, and once it’s in place, there’s no extra cost per data room or per deal, just the flexibility in choosing which region to use. Please visit Emma Legal's pricing page for more information.
What is data residency, and what does it cost?
Data residency is a new option that lets you choose whether your data is stored in the EU or the US, helping you meet client, regulatory or internal requirements. It's available on every plan as a 20% add-on to your subscription.
